What is the MidWestern Wind?
The MidWestern Wind
is an a cappella choral ensemble with eleven members. We specialize
in singing Renaissance choral music but also perform a variety of other
a
cappella genres, including world folk music and contemporary compositions.
More than anything else, we are a group of friends who love to get together
and make beautiful music.
How did MWW get started, and who are the members?
MWW was founded in
October 1998 by first-year Northwestern University medical students David
Sasso, Catherine Borja, and Jeanette Bauchat, along with Karl Borja and
Justin Abate. Over the past two years, the group has grown in size: we
currently have 11 members. We now have five medical students, one medical
school professor, one law students, and four friends as members. We continue
to have close ties to Northwestern University Medical School, as we have
performed at many school functions, including Medical School Commencement
Ceremonies and the National Alumni Board Biannual Meeting.
What does MWW do?
We put on two large concerts
each year, usually with a large choral work as centepiece. In the past
we have performed the Western Wind Mass of John Taverner, The
Lamentations of Jeremiah of Thomas Tallis, and the Mass for Four
Voices of William Byrd. We perform at various events in the Northwestern
and Chicago communities. We have made several live recordings of our concerts,
and produced our first studio recording in 2001.
What does "MidWestern Wind" mean?
The name "MidWestern
Wind" is significant on multiple levels. First, we all live in the beautiful
midwestern city of Chicago, the "windy city." Second, we were inspired
by the first piece that we recorded, the Western Wind Mass of John
Taverner. Third, our motto is "Shaping the Wind into Song." This phrase
is based on a poem by Robert Frost entitled "The Aim was Song." We rejoice
in the human ability to breathe in the Wind, to tame it, to shape it, and
to exhale it in the form of Song. It is this gift that we celebrate each
time we come together in song.
